“It’s because the principles have collapsed,” Ha Hyung-joo, 62, chairman of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, said at a press conference marking his inauguration at the Olympic Parktel in southern Seoul on Sunday. “Athletes’ thoughts and skills are in the 21st century, and their thinking and administration are the same as they were 40 years ago when I was an athlete. Nothing has changed.” Ha, a gold medalist in judo in the 95kg class at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, served as a professor at Dong-A University and worked as a standing auditor of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation before being inaugurated as the head of the corporation for three years on Tuesday. He was named the “2024 Korean Sports Hero” by the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation last month.

When asked about Lee Ki-heung, chairman of the Korea Sports Council, who was asked to investigate by the police on corruption charges, and the noise surrounding the election of the next Korea Sports Council president in January next year, Chairman Ha said at a press conference, “I hope the next chairman of the sports council will be someone who has really played sports with his whole body, so he can personally practice the value of sports.” He also said, “It is a pity that sports with high educational values are organized by some people. There are times when we blame ourselves for what happened when the sports we are pursuing are never like this,” and added, “When we have such deep concerns, we cry because we wonder why we are only this bad.”

Chairman Ha said on the day, “I have longed for the industrial complex ever since I was a professor. I wanted to work at the industrial complex someday because I worked hard, and I am so happy that I made that dream come true. How I felt when I won the Olympic gold medal 40 years ago.” Chairman Ha cited “establishing the basics and principles” as what he wanted to achieve the most during his three-year term. “I want to establish the basic and principles of the industrial complex and set its direction accurately,” he said. “We need to rearm the industrial complex in accordance with its purpose and purpose (growth of sports welfare and the sports industry). Only then will we be able to establish ourselves as a public sports organization that represents the people.”
