Son Heung-min’s legendary treatment No…Reading the count of invoking the ‘one-year extension clause’ → Looking for a competitor for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to be with club captain and Leon Son Heung-min until 2026.

British media ‘Football Transfer’ reported on the 10th (Korea time) that “Tottenham is showing interest in Harvey Poiado (Espanyol) to add depth to the left wing position, but the club is focusing on guaranteeing the future of captain Son Heung-min.”

The media first explained, “Son Heung-min, who currently earns 190,000 pounds (about 335 million won) per week, is Tottenham’s highest source of income,” adding, “The contract between Son Heung-min and Tottenham is valid until 2025.”

“Son Heung-min recently admitted that there has been no discussion on a new contract, but Tottenham plans to sign a one-year extension contract to hold it until 2026,” he added. “It is certain that Son Heung-min will extend it for another year so that he does not leave under a self-sustaining contract.”

“Chairman Daniel Levy’s use of the contract extension is a key strategy to maintain the stability of the team,” he said. “Through this approach, Son Heung-min, the fan’s favorite, is expected to remain a serious figure for a while under coach Anji Postecoglou,” he said, claiming that Son Heung-min will remain a key Tottenham player until June 2026.

Son Heung-min signed a new contract with Tottenham in the summer of 2021 that is valid until June 2025. The contract reportedly includes an option to extend the contract period by one year until June 2026.

Although the contract is about to expire, Tottenham has not yet presented a new contract to Son Heung-min. This is the fact that Son Heung-min himself revealed.

When asked about renewing his contract at an official press conference ahead of the UEFA Europa League match against Karabakh last month, Son Heung-min explained, “I haven’t said anything (with the club) yet.”

“I’m very clear. I’m very focused on this season. Every moment is like a goal at this age,” he said. “I think I’m paying more attention to it, especially because I’m participating in a lot of competitions this season.”

“I am fully focused on this situation and this season. I just want to win what everyone, players and everyone in this club deserves,” he said. “That’s why I play. You never know what will happen in the future,” he said. “I am focusing on winning this season’s trophy.”
“I will do everything for this club. It’s been almost 10 years since I gave everything. Let’s see what happens,” he said. “I’m still contracted with the club, and that’s the most important thing. I just want to do everything for Dong with the remaining contract period,” he said, adding that he wants to do his best for the rest of the year.

Son Heung-min, who joined the Premier League after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga in the summer of 2015, has been playing for Tottenham for more than nine years. He has 164 goals and 86 assists in 415 matches for Tottenham.

At Tottenham, Son has left many records. He became the first Asian player to become the top scorer in the Premier League in the 2021-22 season, and last summer, he was the first non-European player to be named captain of Tottenham. As Tottenham captain, he met his club’s expectations last season by scoring 17 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League.

Son has had two goals and two assists in five Premier League matches this season. Born in 1992, Son is still one of the top wingers in the Premier League, although it will not be long before the decline comes as he turned 32.

However, Tottenham is reluctant to renew the contract with Son in his mid-30s. Instead, it is reported that the team plans to use the option to extend the contract to prevent Son from being released as a free agent next summer. 스포츠토토

“Tottenham will issue a clause to extend Son’s contract for one more year,” Dan Kilpatrick, a reporter familiar with Tottenham’s news, said through the British newspaper The Standard. “His contract will end after the end of this season. However, the club has the option to extend his contract for another 12 months and will exercise it.”

“With this extension, Son Heung-min will spend his 11th season at Tottenham,” he added.

Tom Barclay, a reporter for Britain’s “The Sun” and Tottenham, also said on social networking services (SNS), “Tottenham is reportedly planning to activate their one-year extension option to hand over Son Heung-min’s contract to the summer of 2026.”

The British ‘Guardian’ said, “Son Heung-min looked back on the contract situation after entering the last 12 months of his current contract at Tottenham,” adding, “Tottenham reportedly has the option to extend Son’s contract period by one more year and plans to activate it.”

Locally, Tottenham speculated that the reason why they want to extend their contract with Son Heung-min for only one more year was their strategy to drag on.

Ben Jacobs, a reporter specializing in the transfer market, said, “Tottenham is considering whether to offer Son Heung-min an extension of the contract after 2026. I don’t think Tottenham is desperate to extend Son’s contract with Son until 2026, he said. “It seems that Tottenham is delaying to see if they actually want to hold Son Heung-min after 2026, or if they think 2026 is a natural separation point considering Son’s age and the development of the club.”

“It is normal not to contact the player directly until Tottenham decides what is the best way internally,” he said, explaining why Tottenham has not moved yet.

Since it is not known whether Son Heung-min will maintain his current skills after next year, he interpreted it as an intention to extend it for only one year and then go and see the situation.

This argument is gaining traction due to Tottenham’s move to recruit Son’s competitor. According to Football Transfer, Tottenham is keeping an eye on Spanish left winger Harvey Puado, born in 1998, who has three goals in eight games for Espanyol this season. Puado’s contract with Espanyol expires at the end of this season, so he can be hired as an FA next summer without a transfer fee.
