At the memorial ceremony held at the Seoul National Cemetery in Seoul, President Yoon said to former President Park Geun-hye, “I offer my deepest condolences for the sorrow she has experienced.” President Yoon is known to have personally met former President Park and said, “As I worked as president, I really felt how great President Park Chung-hee was,” and, “He built the Republic of Korea to make a living today.” President Yoon said, “I even took and read the data from that time. He is said to have said, “The more I think about how he prioritized the industry, the more he is an amazing person.” This is the first time that a sitting president has attended the memorial service, which has been held annually since 1980.
At the memorial service, former President Park said, “There are many difficulties facing us now, but I believe that our government and people will overcome them well. At the memorial ceremony on this day, key figures from the ruling party, including People Power Party leader Kim Ki-hyun, floor leader Yoon Jae-ok, and Innovation Committee Chairman In Yo-han, attended the ceremony. Chairman In, who is from Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, served as vice chairman of the National Unification Committee in the transition committee of then-President-elect Park Geun-hye in 2012.
