Ohtani wins MVP in NL…That’s a designated hitter, too

“Superstar” Shohei Ohtani (LA Dodgers), who achieved more than 50 home runs and more than 50 stolen bases in one season for the first time in the U.S. Major League Baseball history, will challenge for the National League MVP.

The MLB Secretariat announced three finalists for the National League and American League MVP, Rookie of the Year, Coach, and Cy Young Awards on the 13th.

In addition to Ohtani, Francisco Lindor (New York Mets) and Ketel Marte (Arizona) were listed as candidates for MVP in the National League.

Ohtani had 54 homers and 59 stolen bases this season, marking the first 50-50 record in the Major League. He had a batting average of 0.310, 130 RBIs and 197 hits in the regular season.

Ohtani was named the American League MVP in 2021 and 2023, when he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. If Ohtani receives the MVP this year, he will be the second player in Major League history to be named the MVP of both leagues. The first was Frank Robinson, who won the MVP of both leagues in Cincinnati in 1961 and Baltimore in 1966.
Ohtani, who only played as a batter this year after undergoing elbow surgery last year, is aiming to become the first full-time designated hitter to win the MVP award. A designated hitter who does not play defense in the MLB has never won the MVP award. 메이저놀이터

All candidates except Ohtani are lagging behind in performance. Shortstop Lindor hit 0.273 with 33 homers, 91 RBIs and 169 hits in the regular season. Second baseman Marte hit 0.292 with 36 homers, 95 RBIs and 147 hits.

American League MVP candidates have been narrowed down to Aaron Judge, Juan Soto (New York Yankees), and Bobby Witt Jr. (Kansas City).

The 2022 American League MVP Judge hit 58 home runs this year, matching his record of 62 home runs (2022).

Emmanuel Clase of Cleveland, Seth Lugo of Kansas City, and Tarik Scubal of Detroit were the nominees for the Cy Young Award in the American League. Clase had four wins, two losses and 47 saves with an ERA of 0.61, while Lugo had 16 wins and nine losses and an earned run average of 3.00. Scubal achieved the “pitcher triple crown” with 18 wins, four losses and a 2.39 ERA.

In the National League, Chris Sale (Atlanta), Paul Skinns (Pittsburgh), and Zack Wheeler (Philadelphia) will be nominated for the Cy Young Award. Sale will compete with 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA and Wheeler with 16-7 with a 2.57 ERA.

With 11 wins and three losses and a 1.96 ERA, Skins has been listed as a candidate for the Rookie of the Year award. He is the fifth rookie to be nominated for the Cy Young Award, 11 years after Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins in 2013. Skins is aiming to win both the Rookie of the Year award and the Cy Young Award, following Fernando Valenzuela, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.

San Diego coach Mike Shildt, who joined Kim Ha-sung as a free agent during the 2024 season, has been nominated for the National League Coach of the Year award. The MVP of the league will be announced on Monday local time in the U.S.
