Seven years have passed since he wore the Doosan uniform, but he still remains in the minds of many people. He also recalls memories of Doosan’s golden age by showing off his robustness in recent popular baseball entertainment programs. Dustin Nippert, 43, the best foreign pitcher of all time, will retire as “Bears.”
The Doosan team plans to hold a Nippert retirement ceremony against KT in Jamsil on the 14th. Nippert played for Doosan from 2011 to 2017, and KT in 2018. His eight-year career performance in the KBO League was 102 wins, 51 losses and an ERA of 3.59 1082 strikeouts in 214 games, 1291.1 innings. He achieved the most wins by foreign players, as well as the most innings and most strikeouts.
His achievements exceeded the number. In 2015, when Doosan won the Korean Series in 14 years, he displayed strength throughout the postseason including the KS. From Nexen and the semi-playoff to NC and the playoffs, to Samsung and the KS, he showed superb performance in every game he took. In Game 5 of the KS, which won the playoff series MVP award and ended the championship, he took the mound as an intermediate pitcher and continued his performance. Due to Nippert, who had three wins and an ERA of 0.56 in five games and 32.1 innings in the postseason, Doosan was able to rise to the top.
The following year was also impressive. In the 2016 season, Doosan won multiple titles (25.95), 22 wins), and a winning percentage (0.880) overall, becoming the MVP of the season. Doosan also won the title overall, boasting enormous power centered on ace Nippert. The team had 93 wins, 50 losses and one draw overall during the regular season. At the KS, it swept the NC Dinosaurs 4-0 in the series, making it the most perfect season in the history of Doosan.
Having served as Doosan’s ace until 2017, Nippert moved to KT in 2018. While serving as KT’s young pitching mentor, he led the starting lineup by playing 29 games and 175.2 innings. At the age of 37, Nippert has 165 strikeouts, the highest in a single season.
Since then, Nippert has failed to continue his relationship with the KBO League club. Still, he stayed in Korea and opened a baseball class. He sometimes appeared in entertainment programs, but from this year, he throws balls as a member of the “Strongest Monsters.” He still keeps his back door by throwing fastballs with speeds of over 150 kilometers per hour.
