Jang announced his retirement from the national team through his social media on Wednesday. “Time flies and time never stops. There are always new faces of the younger generation who are struggling here with passion for their dreams. There are always people who want to leave. I understand leaving. This is not the end but a new beginning,” he said, announcing his retirement from the national team.
Zhang Yi-man added, “I hope that the Chinese badminton team and the women’s singles team will get better and better in the future. I hope that the Five Star Red Flag will fly every winter.”
After being selected for the national team in January 2015, Zhang Yi-man played for the Chinese national team for nearly a decade. She won the women’s singles at the 2019 Vietnam Open, ranked third in the women’s singles at the 2021 World Championships, and won the Thai Masters women’s singles in 2023.
She participated in the Chinese Masters last month and became her last career member of the Korean national team. Jang, who was ranked 24th in the world, lost to Ahn Se-young 0-2 in 38 minutes in the quarterfinals at the time, failing to advance to the semifinals.
China’s He Bing Zhao, who lost to An in the final at the Paris Olympics, also announced his retirement from the national team after the event. Chinese veterans who felt the growth of young players on the global stage including An Se-young have retired this season in succession. In the men’s national team, Zhao Junfeng and Zheng Shwei of mixed doubles also announced their retirement.
