“Welcome home”… Director of “PL Winning Fairy Tale” completes 3rd return

Coach Claudio Ranieri, who led Leicester City to the Premier League (PL) championship, joined AS Roma.
Rome officially announced on the club’s website on the 14th (Korea Standard Time), “Roma is happy to announce that Coach Ranieri has become the coach of the first team.”

His managerial role lasted until this season. “Ranieri will take over as senior manager at the end of the season. He will be a consultant to the owner on all sporting matters for the club. The search for a new coach will continue for months to come and Ranieri will have a say in the decision,” Roma said.

Ranieri is an Italian veteran leader. He played in the 1970s and 1980s and retired from the U.S. Palermo in 1986 to start his managerial career. He went to and from various teams. He continued his career by leading big teams including Napoli, Fiorentina, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, and Juventus.

The 2015-16 season remains the strongest in Korean fans’ memory. It was Leicester City’s fairytale-like victory during this season 메이저놀이터. Back then, the club was in its second season after promotion. As it ranked 14th in the previous season, no one predicted their victory. However, Leicester had 23 wins, 12 draws and three losses (81 points) in 38 league matches thanks to Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez, and Danny Drinkwater, and was at the top of the league by beating second-ranked Arsenal by a 10-point margin.

Ranieri has since left Leicester. Starting with Nantes in 2017, he has played for Fulham, Sampdoria and Watford, and coached Cagliari Calcho from 2022 to 2024.

He also has deep connection with Roma. He played for about two years as a player and already served as a coach twice. He started his managerial career from the third round in 2009, and won 2-1 in a matchup with Juventus F.C., his debut game. Under Ranieri, Roma continued their race to win the title until the end, but ended the season in second place by losing two points to Inter Milan. During his second season, he was curiously trying to win the title. However, he ended the season with six consecutive games without a win in the beginning of the season, and suffered a four-game losing streak at the end of the season.

The second was in 2019. Then-Coach Ranieri took charge in the middle of the season and played the final game of the league. He coached only 12 games, but recorded six wins, four draws and two losses in the league, and Roma finished the season in fifth place thanks to his performance.
